Jõhvi State Upper Secondary School
Gross area: 3974 m2
Cost of construction: 3 900 000 €
An important part of Jõhvi’s new identity
“The designer on the project, architect Maarja Nummert, gave the building a circular floor plan at the centre of which is an amphitheatre-style assembly hall-cum-auditorium with tiered flooring. The hall opens out in all directions
One of the keywords in coming up with the architectural concept was ‘integration’ (of students and teachers), which the circular, open atrium facilitates. But we asked ourselves: why stop there? So we designed the entire building according to that same principle. And it works – the learning environment has become more open, people have become more open and everyone at the school cares about the building and the inspirational environment it provides.
With its unique appearance, the building adds considerably to the urban environment, encouraging the local authority to take the surrounding urban space to a new aesthetic level.”

“The designer fell in with the client’s ideas of how a school should be organised from the very start and came up with a solution for the building that was ideal for putting that ideology into practice… The design process went very smoothly, marked by cooperation in an atmosphere of mutual understanding, and was a very enjoyable and creative time for the client. The Võru State Upper Secondary School standing today is very close indeed to the vision we had of the future building beforehand.”
